In the Civil War the Union XI Corps was composed of German immigrants. Their original commander was Franz Sigel and included such generals as Adophe Von Steinwehr, Carl Schurz, Leopold Von Gilsa, and Alexander Schimmelfennig. Most were chosen because they spoke German rather than any military ability and the XI Corps collapsed and ran at the consecutive battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
They were not highly regarded by either side although the Rebs were usually glad to see them.
