His approval rating is so low, that if he came out as an atheist, he would set back the possibility of an atheist being elected by decades. It would be just one more thing the idiots could blame their disapproval on.
It's important to remember that a significant portion of his disapproval rating, much like the disapproval rating of Obamacare, is from liberals like myself.
History will have to debate whether Obama was a deluded and tragic idealist or an ingenious sellout.
