Back in the fourth century Augustine made it clear that the Genesis account must be allegorical, based on days, morning and evening occurring before the sun was made. 6 day creationism is a minority sport in Christendom, and seems to be almost peculiarly American. Here in England I haven't actually met any 6 day creationists (though I am sure we must have some).
