I could have sworn the Mughals were Muslim. (Shah Jahan builder of the Taj certainly was) The Taj is purely Muslim in concept; a representation of paradise.
The point of Persian influence on Islamic art and architecture is widely acknowledged. I think it's reasonable to say that the style which is called 'Islamic' is a combination of several earlier traditions, instead of an original one. (as indeed is our own)
It's a great pity Shah Jahan never got to build the other one as he had planned,on the other side of the river,in black marble.
