In America, liberal and conservative are sexually confused since the late 1960s when the Republicans adopted the South. Republicanism was at its core socially and economically liberal.

The south has always been socially authoritarian. The north always tended to be more economically authoritarian. That much has never changed. The great depression shook everything up economic principals. FDR was really the beginning of the republican/democrat trade off. Kennedy was the last straw. Nixon was the Camels broken back.
