You are correct "It is kind of hard to be racist against a race that does not exist", but this is not about intelligent people. It is about people who let religious organizations think for them and they have been the majority so far.
If equality for women and gays is not something you crave for whatever society you are in, then your sense of social justice and conscience is no better than that of those who discriminate without just cause.
For evil to grow all people have to do is what you recommend doing. Nothing.
