Yes, many times, users thought some "switch" could be flicked to achieve what they want.
Faster, different functionality, whatever.
The funny part is, sometimes that switch DOES exist.
I'm aging myself here, but I seem to remember some DEC minicomputer had such a switch and the only difference between machine "A" costing $$$$ and machine "B" costing $$$$$$$ was the position of that switch.
But usually, there is no such switch, physical or virtual.
