Bear in mind, this was an old PC-XT, which had a large red switch on the side with clearly labeled "ON" and "OFF" positions. This was akin to complaining that the room was dark then sheepishly realizing that you hadn't opened your eyes.
I used to do PC support decades ago - and I'm not surprised there were still PC-XT's still running back then.
Kind of hard to miss the Big Red Switch, IMO. At least it was plugged in.

"My PC won't work."
"Power cycle it." (turn off, wait, then back on)
"Still doesn't work."
"Are you sure it's plugged in?"
"Of course I am, do you think I'm stupid or something?"
"Of course not, sir. Would you please humor me and double check it?" (this means "I don't know if you're stupid or not, but we're going to perform an empirical test to find out."
<grumbles> "Oh, OK."

"Hey, it started working again, thanks."
