It can be very hard to tell what is meant literally, and what is meant metaphorically. You would think some things just shouldn't be taken literally, lest you die an early painful death. Unfortunately these kinds of people really don't care about this life. they're told not to care about this life, so why should they care if they die early?
Your right, and this is why some religions can be so dangerous, they just don't give a shit about here and now, and because of this we who are enjoying our life here and now, have to suffer, or put up with all their crap.
