I would go as far as to say that it is THE most important part in Christianity.
That means your favorite myth is senseless to the core. If god wanted to forgive us why could he not do it? Is there some higher power binding him? If so why worship him and not this power? Maybe it is loving and just? A loving and just being would consider scapegoating morally reprehensible and unjust. And they would think even more so of the idea of infinite punishment for finite crimes. So which is it? Either god is loving and just but bound to a higher power or he is omnipotent but neither loving nor just.
