I didn't notice anything in the Bible commanding Christians to want to live as long as possible. Yes suicide is a Christian no-no. And I understand not wanting to lose you loved ones to the grim reaper. I also understand not wanting to leave people who need you in the lurch.
But, if you really know you're going to a better place, why would you panic on the threshold between life and death? If you really know, you ought to go with joy and anticipation. That so many Christians do panic, suggests that they don't "know" god exists in the way they say they do.
Beyond the lack of faith suggested by old and ill Christians praying not to die, or just plain dying in fear, there is a fundamental problem with any religion the promises a better life after death than the present life. If the next life is better, and belief is all that's necessary to get there, what is the purpose of this life? I hear Christians saying Jesus gives their live meaning, but what kind of meaning is striving to stay alive to avoid going to a better place?
If there is a god, I want to believe that there is a god. If there is not a god, I want to believe that there is no god.
