One point I've never had explained is why the person doing the praying needs to say that they are praying. If the praying has any effect at all, it's going to have it whether or not I know you're doing it. The only reason I have ever found for this peculiar habit is to give the prayor the chance to show that they are at least concerned about the prayee, in a childish "fuck your problems - look at me, what I'm doing for you" kind of way.
