Being pro death penalty doesn't deviate much from being religious - Both require a lack of knowledge on science (in the case of the death penalty - Criminology) and a high degree of belief (that the death penalty is this wonderful method that will fix the problem right away). If someone killed my relatives, I'd kill the person myself, I wouldn't ask the State to fulfil my revenge using justice as a cover system.
If at least the death penalty decreased crime rates, practical utility would exist - A sentence without practical utility is worthless. What intimidates criminals is not so much the severity of the penalty, but the certainty of it. If there is a feeling of impunity, that's a half-way ticket to increase crime rates.
