Between 1993 and 2012, the violent crime rate (homicide, robbery, rape and aggravated assault) in the United States dropped by 48 percent. During the same period, the violent crime rate in New York City dropped by 71 percent.

Indeed - the last time the nationwide homicide rate was lower than it is now, was the year JFK was assassinated (1963). We've been on a steady decline since peaking at 10.2/100K in 1980 (Source: FBI Uniform Crime Report)

We're improving. Yes, we can do more, particularly in terms of providing opportunity and support for at-risk individuals and communities.
