This is a sad commentary on the intelligence of the individuals who put these fools into positions of leadership and power. A fantastic essay by John Erskine entitled "The Moral Obligation to Be Intelligent" comes to mind. In this essay, Erskine argues that each person has a responsibility to be intelligent because one individual's ignorance can and will eventually have unwanted consequences for others. This is an example of just that. We have a scientifically ignorant and superstitious population who elect individuals woefully unfit for any leadership position, let alone a role in the government where they have a voice in shaping public policy. Their ignorance and poor choices stemming from this obliviousness are not only harming us individually; they are harming the planet as a whole because the people they elect are oftentimes as ignorant, superstitious, and suspicious of science and reason as they are.
