I have a very short list of people that I consider my people. Less than half of them are white.

Yes, but you do have a group which you consider 'your people' by whatever criteria. Let's call that your tribe. Allegiance to a tribe requires that the tribe be identifiable whether that be as individuals (hard to do with more than a couple dozen members) or as -all those with a minimum amount of melanin in their skin- or as -those people with whom I share a specifically defined false belief and cut off the end of my penis-. Being a member of that tribe gives you access to its protection and its ability to command resources by force. It's a very stable and useful structure in human society. War paint might identify your side in a skirmish (like football jerseys.) Skin color can be just another way to tell who's on your side in a fight.

Back MANY years ago, at summer camp, the counselors split us up by eye color and gave each side a few eye shade slurs to yell at each other. We were at each others collective throats by the end of the afternoon. It's really easy to set up. Really hard to suppress.
