If you're looking to find a sense of empathy from watching S&M vids or FPS games, then yeah, you're living in an impoverished world.
Me, I hone my sense of empathy by talking with -- and more importantly, listening to -- people. It's been my experience that almost everyone has good in them even if they've led a bad life. When I'm able to find the good in them, I find that my sense of empathy is strengthened. Of course, this means forgiving people their mistakes, and trying to put myself in their shoes -- understanding what drove them to make the decisions they did, no matter whether I think them right or wrong.
People are pretty good, on the whole. Yeah, there's a bunch of assholes, and yeah, even the good ones have a shitty side to them.
Religious or atheist, if you don't like other people, you won't be empathetic; and if you do like other people, you will feel for them.
