Dude, you seriously need to study some history. the USA has been in far worse shape in the not-so-distant-past, what with slavery written into the Constitution; Andrew Jackson breaking treaties and forcing the Cherokee on a death march; Lincoln imposing federal rule on the states; the Know-nothings; KKK Lynchings; McCarthyism; Kent State; Watergate - and that's just off the top of my head.
Truth is, the media lives on conflict and hype. Journalism rule #1 - "if it bleeds, it leads." Nobody does stories about he fact that violent crime has been on a steady decline for ~20 years because it's boring. But let's face it; civil rights just keep on marching ahead, with what - 37 states now? allowing gay marriage, and hate crimes on the decline.
Yeah, we're a f88ked-up hodgepodge of opinionated jerks, religious zealots, and utopianist nutbars. So what? We've always been a mess, that's just who we are.
