Immortality based on material would obviously have an off switch. It would not be immortality at all, strictly speaking. One would be free from death by aging. A backup would be possible to deal with accidents too but we're not talking about an indestructible being.

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.
