They are allowed to believe in evolution (guided by God), but they are required to literally believe that God created the first man (Adam) in some way. (If they believe in evolution, they might imagine that God gave a soul to a hominid to instantly transform it from animal to man.) Then Adam committed a sin, and all humans physically inherited both our souls and guilt for that original sin - guilt that makes us deserve to burn in hell for eternity.
