I am from the Northwest, where BBQ is considered "grilled meat" usually steak, chicken, burgers, hot dogs, etc. Very much like rexbecca says.
But in the south, (mind you, I have never been there, but I watch too much Food Network) BBQ is something way more in depth. And ooooohhhh... yeah. Meat cooked usually with wood fire, slow and low. That is my favorite BBQ. My favorites are beef brisket, and pork ribs. The sides, collard greens, spicy down home mac and cheese....and much more..
One of my friends said when they visited the south they would get "BBQ", and it was usually pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on it.
