There's talk that it might be a violation of the Logan Act.
I'm currently watching Jon Stewart who is showing Nancy Pelosi unercutting GW in Syria in 2007. And the Republicans and Faux News pitching a loaf, and the Dems back then applauding Pelosi. Just goes to show Jon Stewart skewers the Dems when they do ridiculous shit, too.
So it's happened before, when the Speaker of the House went to Syria at a time when GWB was not negotiating with them.
The funniest part to me, though, is that in a letter where the GOP was trying to teach the Ayatollah Khomeini a lesson on how the Constitution works, the GOP got it wrong. They made an "unfortunate error" in their own letter.

"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
