Among all ecomomic tools of exchange only barter guarantees you 'confidence' in most cases. If a global catastrophy occurs and the civilization falls no-one in their mind will change their food and ammo for your useless shiny metal. Gold matters more than paper money or bitcoins purely because it has been a currency for a far longer time and it has always been used for jewelry and liked for its shiny appearance. Otherwise it's nothing more than a relatively rare metal with good electrical conductivity.
