I don't know why the deaf, blind, and mute man (it's not PC to say 'dumb' anymore, right?) had Keller to begin with. He wasn't a helper dog or anything like that. I think the guy thought "he's a Golden Retriever, he'll be my seeing eye dog," or something like that. We are piecing together bits of information. Apparently he would stomp on the ground to call him.
Poor boy has had sensory deprivation. He's smart as hell, though. He figured out the doggy door in the first 20 mins.
