This problem is more widespread in Australia, but I had real trouble procuring the entertainment I wanted there at a reasonable price. You tend to pay the Australia Tax on media there, but I was always really willing to pay money for things, just assuming there wasn't a considerable markup compared to other countries, and it came out in a timely manner.
I used to pirate movies and TV shows simply because they were available far quicker through torrent services than they were on the shelves. When they came onto the shelves, I'd buy the things I torrented; that way, I got the advantages of fair release schedules and prices- I'd only buy on sale when the price wasn't hideously over-inflated- while still ensuring they got my sale. I felt it was a good compromise, until the distributors deigned to start marketing things fairly.
