I imagined the "fruit of the knowledge of good and evil" to mean that Adam and Eve decided they were so smart that they could judge good and evil without God's help.
I wonder if there are earlier versions of the Garden of Eden story in other cultures? The flood story has earlier versions.
The earliest version was written in a language more closely related to ancient Hebrew than any other language and the other copies were around 7th century BC.
As for what you said about Adam and Eve, I can see that as what they were deceived into thinking, why else would they have eaten it.
