I think the IS enforcement crews forfeited their status as human when they began beheading Christians and other apostates to create their reign of terror. They can be treated as if they were a dangerous virus or cancer as far as I'm concerned. If, at a later time, they rethink what they're doing now, then they can be readmitted to the human race.
I don't feel the West has a special moral superiority entitling it to act as a world judge, so I'm reluctant to say we should do it with IS. Our regime changes and meddling in that region have never gone well in past, and probably won't go well this time either. But IS is just one of those things that can't be allowed to stand unchallenged, as Nazism under Hitler was. It has to be destroyed, with terms of unconditional surrender or death for its leadership. Perhaps a world court can decide at trial if their lives are to spared (life in prison) in the event of a guilty finding of crimes against humanity, but I think they should be held accountable and if it were my choice the hangman would pay them a visit.
Education of course helps; it was done in Germany after Hitler was gone. But we still had to get rid of Hitler first. I'm also not assuming we are "above" the possibility of barbarism ourselves; biologically we're the same species. If we do go that route one day, then I hope Europe or China would do the same to our dictators that I propose we do to IS's. There are certain kinds of government that can't be dealt with by peaceful diplomacy. Attempting diplomacy with IS will gain nothing, and likely embolden them to broaden their conquests into North Africa.
