No one is suggesting that we set aside the red white and blue, despite being drenched in blood and oppression the likes of which the virginia battle flag will -never- attain........Like I said, unfairly or not. The display of the flag (or its suppression) and any conversation about what it represents are exclusive of one another. And yes, that IS what it has become. I wouldn't say that we allowed it as much as we created that association, deliberately or not (I think it was partly deliberate, but much of what informs our cultural views isn't pre-planned). Whether or not we get rid of the symbol will not prevent us from confronting the issue, in the same way that continuing to display it has not forced us to confront it.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."
