Are you from the southern US? I caused some confusion when I lived in the western US because I said the word, hey instead of hello.
One time I was passing my neighbor's house and I shouted, "Hey" to him. He stood up and asked what I needed. Confused, I told him that I didn't need anything. He asked why I said, hey. I told him I was just being friendly. We stared at each other for a few minutes and went on our way. Our families never really got friendly but it took me years to figure out why he couldn't just accept a friendly greeting.
