Being a musician and still regularly gigging and recording, this concept of selling out has definitely had its day in court with me and my fellow entertainers.
Most of us consider "selling out" only ONE thing ... and one thing ONLY: Changing everything you do and everything you've ever been simply to get signed to a label and/or sell records. With that in mind, artists like Taylor Swift or Hanson or One Direction are NOT sell outs. At no time were they ever writing and performing death metal or gangster rap and then suddenly switching over to mainstream country and pop. Do I listen to them? Hell no! but certainly not because they "sold out". They were creating mainstream music from day one.
You want an example of a sell out: Goo Goo Dolls and Sugar Ray are both excellent examples of bands that COMPLETELY changed everything they were putting out in order to become rich and famous. These bands disgust me and IMO do not have an ounce of credibility.
