Everybody's a bit different and the lines are often blurred. I wouldn't consider Van Halen metal. I consider them hard rock along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Guns N' Roses.
No doubt, good point. But having settled in California after living in Iran, VH, and the hair-metal that they inspired, was definitely metal to us then. Now, I don't think of hair-metal as metal nowadays, but VH's first four albums to my ears are still in there.
Soundgarden certainly wasn't pure metal, but when I hear shit like "Jesus Christ Pose" or "Limo Wreck" I hear metal. One thing I love about that band is how they fused American metal and South Asian musical sensibilities into coherent songs. Well that, and Cornell's lyrical sensibility.

I also can't think 'heavy metal' without upping the irons.
Yeah, Maiden was the shit, and Testament too. My first garage band covered "Run to the Hills", and were working on "The Trooper" when real life took and I quit to take a paying job.
