You should go back and re-read Fermi's Paradox. The whole point he makes is that it's NOT that big. A single technological civilization could colonize an entire galaxy in a relatively short time - if they desired to.
Oh I know. I'm not saying I agree with FP. I mean, it could be legit, but I definitely have my doubts.
