Some people wanted to abolish slavery because they saw that slavery deprived white people of jobs. They had no intent on having the freed slaves as their neighbors and best buddies.
Plus I don't see it as being Christianity that oppressed anyone, it just happened to be the religion of the people doing the oppression, a lot of the first abolitionists were Christian. People of colour, like anyone else, are oppressed by people in a stronger position who want their resources.
It's a good question though, I did wonder while I was working with people from Africa in work why it is they have such an unquestioning belief in the bible and a pretty aggressive stance against homosexuality.
Black Africans are generally insane with some being more bat shit crazy than the other ones. But they are all nuts. In comparison about half of the people in the rest of the world are nuts. So if you are in a room with another person chances are one of you is crazy.
All these statements are incredibly vague and none of this really means anything with regarding Christianity. If you're going to judge people back then by todays standards than the vast majority of them would be considered racist.
Saying that it was a religion that oppressed black people would be like saying it was guns, chains and ocean faring that oppressed black people.
Are you ready for the fire? We are firemen. WE ARE FIREMEN! The heat doesn’t bother us. We live in the heat. We train in the heat. It tells us that we’re ready, we’re at home, we’re where we’re supposed to be. Flames don’t intimidate us. What do we do? We control the flame. We control them. We move the flames where we want to. And then we extinguish them.
Impersonation is treason.
