Thinking about this during the day (when not answering questions about Clare county council), I think May has pulled this stunt for two reasons, 1) to ensure the hardest of hard brexits. I was ever suspicious of her remain credentials, in the coalition she was the EU's biggest critic and during the referendum she was nowhere to be seen (unlike Corbyn who actually toured the country and gave many stump speeches in support). The tranch of new Tory MPs coming in will, to a man, be the kind of swivel eyed loons that'll want the country out no matter what.
2) She knows that a hard brexit will be disasterous for the party of government at the next election, so calling one now gives her a few years (not really, the FTPA is now dead) and the chance to call herself a "two term" PM.
So as you said it's all for her narrow personal interests.
