Humans will always unfortunately be tribal. But even outside war, I think anyone can understand that if you get punched in the face, the person you punch might react in kind.
Bin Laden was the cause for the Afghanistan invasion. Even back then, there was a debate between Americans if a ground invasion was warranted. Anyone can armchair quarterback what we should have done now. But the point was we were sucker punched. I think we could have taken Bin Laden out without a ground invasion, but that is not what happened.
Not to get sappy, but I love my species and hate my species at the same time. I love that we can, when we want, be extremely empathetic and kind, but hate my species because we, at the same time can be extremely cruel.
I'd agree with the likes of Ayaan Hirsi Ali and the likes of Malala, in that currently, the state of the Middle East still seems to be stuck hundreds of years in the past, socially, politically and religiously. But at the same time, we have right wing Christian factions just as afraid of change and pluralism. But currently, I am more afraid of our far right Christians than a Afghanistan interpreter who helped us for 20 years.
