I'm not sure the 'why' matters too much,but the 'what' does.
Lest you think I'm being self righteous:
when I was about 14,my Canadian-born mother observed that the y reasons Australia does not have the same racial problems as the US is lack of numbers of black people in the early days of settlement. We also had the white Australia policy until 1972.
We DID however treat the indigenous people far worse then the US. EG we believed for many years that we had succeeded in killing ALL of the aborigines on the island state of Tasmania. In some places , Aborigines were hunted and killed for sport. (last recorded incident was in 1920)
