China comes to mind, although they do it by refraining from exercising their total control to its fullest extent. Adding a dash of capitalism to their communism brought hundreds of millions of Chinese out of what the UN defines as absolute poverty, one of the most dramatic economic shifts of the last fifty years.
The other end of the tightrope they're walking leads to 'capitalist in all but name' I think, but arguably they're managing the transition semi-competently.
