I'm not sure I have a detailed strategy. if starting in the ancient age, archery is usually the first thing I research. I usually have raging barbarians, so the unexplored world is full of them. Two warriors and an archer is typically enough to take care of any settlements that are close to me. I usually leave the far away ones alone, unless they're next to a city state I want to befriend. That eventually leads to an army of barbarians that will tear a single scouting unit apart, which can be good or bad for me.
I like to work on science first, since you can get libraries up and make research agreements. I usually scout the area, looking for defensible positions or a variety of luxury goods and such before expanding. I don't attack anyone until after the classical age techs, where I have horsemen, swordsmen, and catapults. Even then I may not attack unless someone has a high quality spot.
Later in the game I try to unlock later resources before getting troop techs that rely on those resources.
