There aren't thousands of active members. Hundreds maybe. But that's a generous estimate.
I don't really have the time to try to figure out how many "active" posters there are but I would say hundreds not thousands. There may be somewhere on the site that tells how many were active in the last month, but it would likely still include people who only made one post.

67 people online in the last 15 minutes.
That's the best stats I can find. I think we probably have a couple hundred who are fairly active right now.
