Well, that might work, except that in a situation when someone makes a sudden irreversible and time-sensitive decision, that may not be in their best interest - there may not be enough time to assess whether, or not they're competent. Which was my whole point regarding the termination of a pregnancy shortly before birth. People can lose their marbles very suddenly.
As for seat-belt laws - I'd rather force people to wear them, than pay with my taxes for keeping them on life support.
ETA: I will plead hypocrisy here, though, since I tend to endanger my life constantly, by - among other things - smoking, using drugs, street-skating without protective gear, neglecting my mental health, being a mouthy pr*ck, etc, so I won't blame you for taking my opinion with a grain of salt or two.
