Some people can be declared mentally incompetent and then someone else can make decisions for them. If they don't qualify as mentally incompetent they should get to make their own choices even if they make terrible choices.
Same way with motorcycling. It infuriates me when people talk about the expense of paying taxes to keep us on life support, so motorcyclists should be required by law to wear helmets. That said, I always ride in full, armored leathers, steeltoed boots, gloves, and helmet. Why? Because I like my skin.
We have states that do and that don't have helmet laws. Can anyone point me to the wards overflowing with bikers on life support, in the latter group of states? Anyone?
It's an asshole argument. "I don't want to pay for __(insert imaginary outcome here)__ therefore I will impose this odious government intrusion onto you, since you cannot make decisions for yourself and need a nanny".
It is interesting to note, here, how many rights stem from the fundamental principle of a right to bodily integrity and choice. Once you accept that the government can control your body and your personal decisions...
Like the right to life?
