Yes, "Ich bin ein Berliner" was grammatically correct(*). And yet, deliciously ambiguous
(*) "Ich bin Berliner" would have been an unambiguous declaration of citizenship rather than pastryship, but would not have served as a symbolic declaration (he really would have claimed to be born in Berlin or so). Alas, the term Berliner for the pastry is used in the south where I'm from, not in Berlin, so he was ok
