I don't know, but the British are also called "limey", by inhabitants some of their ex-colonies, allegedly because of consumption of lime-juice enforced by the British navy, as a way to prevent scurvy. Understandably - most of the Brits encountered by people in America, or Australia would be in the navy. I'd venture a guess, that maybe pommegranite could have been used instead of limes by some sailors, but I base this on absolutely nothing.
