I don't think it would be in the best interest of Republicans as a party to support 3rd party candidates. If Democrats win this year - that's one problem, but if Johnson, Stein, or whoever else gets a good percentage of votes - it may result in an even stronger 3rd party candidates in 2020, with whom Republicans will have to compete. I'm sure they'd rather lose one election and keep the 2-party system more-less intact, especially that fiscal policies of libertarians could result in significant percentage of conservative voters switching their sympathies, if third party candidates became viable.
