So this season is actually pretty good. And surprise--Turns out that Purging actually floods the brain's pleasure centers with dopamine, causing some Purgers to become addicted to committing violent acts. They're jonesing to murder all year round. Who'd a thunk it?
However, unofficial government policy is to cover up off-Purge murders as accidental deaths so as not to depart from the New Founding Fathers of America's assertion that "The Purge works" in keeping America safe by allowing to citizens to purge themselves of all their violent impulses one day a year. This season heavily explores off-Purge fuckery and reveals more of the specifics of the Purge's true purpose: Population control--particularly the culling of poor, homeless, and other disadvantaged "drains on society in order to slash government spending, and to provide tremendous profits for the NFFA's various corporate interests.
For anyone wondering, The Purge is actually more of a character-driven socio-political commentary than it is a showcase for gore and gratuitous violence. What actually makes the show disturbing to me is that certain aspects of it's political theme don't seem all that far-fetched; Especially when considering America's current climate.
Anyway, I recommend it.
