Furthermore, respect doesn't mean you let the enemy keep terrorizing their victims. Nor does it mean "allow your enemy to build effective shrines to the leaders who waged violent war against you."
To carry on your advocacy to an individual level, it seems the closest equivalent is stating the local rapist should be allowed to threaten his victims after spending time in prison. After all, he did his time, right? Right? Seriously, please let me know where you stand on this. We have restraining orders for that kind of shit and we don't allow that. Neither should we allow praise of a definitively evil regime (Confederacy) on taxpayer property.
They murdered Americans and sundered the nation out of fear that slavery would be abolished. No act of Congress at the time of the start of the Civil War had been passed to end Southern slavery.
