Yeah, when I was a kid that was the path. Right off the Cape Verde Islands off the West Coast of Africa and then the trade winds would carry them across.
Now those rarely make it across because they get deflected by High Pressure systems that form over the continent. The ones that get through are far to the south and start with the Antillies Islands and work their way up through the Bahamas.
But the first time I heard of one forming in the Gulf wasn't that long ago and I was surprised. I didn't think the Gulf was big enough but it sure as hell has gotten warm enough.
