I've always considered it very simple to explain since it was first explained to me. But then maybe who explained it to me explained it well.
The clue is in the etymology. "Bi"="two" but "pan"="all". So bisexuals are attracted to both sexes (meaning male and female), but pansexuals are attracted to all sexes, including non-binary.
Furthermore bisexuals, despite being attracted to both males and females, may be more attracted to one sex than the other . . . but for pansexuals the sex of the person has no bearing on how attractive they find them. They only see the person and are only attracted to the person, regardless of their sex.
