I routinely got pulled out of the boarding line for the quick empty your pockets and pat down.
1975. Flew home* with an airline that I swore I would never fly with again. Changed tickets to Pan Am at first opportunity. Then I was a young man who bought a one-way ticket on short notice. (Profile flashing madly.) When I checked in for the flight four men approached me and asked me to step into the stairwell with them. (Not so fancy back then.) I turned to the parents and said "Hey, I'm a flight risk!" Mom and Y-donor both laughed. Four men started looking embarrassed. When we got into the stairwell they asked for ID. I gave them my USN ID card and one other card. They apologized.
These days they wouldn't apologize.
*Rare return home because Mom was sick.
