When I was in Catholic school they just wanted us to read. I don't recall any book being a no-no. By middle school most of us owned OUIJA boards. You would think that would present the perfect opportunity to summon the dark side.
For a few weeks when I was in high school the curriculum (ahem) was listening to and discussing Jesus Christ Superstar. I guess my little Catholic hometown wasn't so uptight.
Fantasy books were not banned when I was in Catholic schools (1953-1966), but books on evolution, comparative religious studies, or atheism were not available in the school libraries either.
I took a class called 'World Religions'. It was a brief overview at best but apparently they weren't scared of letting us know there were other faith practices out there. It was taught by a priest. I guess my HS was pretty progressive.
They even brought in 'Jesus Freaks' to talk with us. Apparently a group of young people who had gotten into drugs/trouble and then found Jesus in a hippie kind of way. The school and diocese seemed pretty intent on not pushing us away but instead tried to make things more appealing. It was also the time when they started having folk masses.
